Music Censorship

F@%*K Censorship

Music censorship is detraction from artists’ work and restricts freedom of speech. Many artists are forced by record labels to produce clean albums, or alter their lyrics for radio play. Not only does it restrict the artists’ freedom, but also fans alike are affected by censorship. Music enthusiasts of all kinds love to hear real music, not altered or “bleeped” out. Listening, exploring, and enjoying are all essential parts to a great musical experience. Censorship of music inhibits from all of these parts, making it more difficult for all music listeners to find and hear real raw music. Enforcing censorship in music is a form of limiting a person’s freedom of speech and taking away from the value of the art itself, while also inhibiting the listener.

Censorship is equivalent to blotting out a portion of a painting, or ripping out part of a movie. It is an unethical practice used to drive sales and protect innocent ears. Words are made for one reason: to be spoken. Different words are used to evoke all sorts of emotions. Music censorship dilutes the artists’ work by altering or “bleeping” out certain words. Also, some stores won’t even carry albums unless they are clean. It is an unfair practice, for the artist and listener alike, and shouldn’t be practiced in any setting, ranging from radio, albums, singles, music videos, etc.
